Independence Day Trivia!
As we celebrate the 4th, let’s take a moment to honor the grit and sacrifice of our Founding Fathers. The Declaration of Independence isn’t just a piece of paper—it’s a bold stand for freedom that still inspires us to stay resilient and self-reliant. Here are five little-known facts about the Declaration to spark some conversation at your BBQ (BTW: This will be my first BBQ with my brand new Granddaughter!) :
The declaration wasn’t signed on July 4th: The Continental Congress adopted the Declaration on July 4, 1776, but most delegates didn’t sign it until August 2, 1776. July 2, was actually when they voted for independence, but the 4th became the iconic date.
A Second Copy Was Found in England: In 2017, researchers discovered the “Sussex Declaration” in West Sussex, England. Unlike the copy in the National Archives, its signatures aren’t grouped by state, suggesting it was tied to James Wilson’s push for the Declaration as a unified act of the people, not just states.
Jefferson’s Slavery Clause Was Cut: Thomas Jefferson’s original draft included a passage blaming King George III for forcing slavery on the colonies. Congress removed it to appease southern states like South Carolina and Georgia, showing how politics shaped even this revolutionary document.
The Ink Has Faded Badly: By 1876, the original parchment’s ink was already fading due to poor storage and exposure to light. Today, it’s barely legible, preserved under strict conditions at the National Archives.
It Inspired Other Nations: The Declaration influenced over a dozen countries, including Haiti (1804), Argentina (1816), and even Rhodesia (1965), though some omitted key phrases like “all men are created equal.” It’s a global blueprint for liberty.
